Respiratory Problems

I am hydrocephalic, and have had 50+ neurosurgeries. I have recently developed (any time) apnea, which is gradually getting worse. I often stop breathing when concentrating on something, realizing it when I am almost gasping. Every system in my body has been checked out, but of course others can't catch this because when they are testing me, I am concentrating on what I am doing. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Hi.

Does the apnea occur during sleep? Are you awakened by apnea? Or does it only occur when you are awake? When you concentrate on breathing, is your breathing "normal" or still difficult?

If your apnea occurs even during sleep, it might appear that you are suffering from central apnea, which can be possibly be caused by many neurological insults. Your previous history of hydrochephalus and numerous neurosurgeries might have played a role in the symptoms' recent onset.

You should consult your neurologist regarding this possibility.

Hope this helps.
