Right sided numbess

Right sided numbess

My boyfriends father recently experienced an episode of dizziness followed by numbess throughout the whoe right side of his body. He was rushed to the emergency room where they did a CT scan and blood work to rule out a CVA as they are common in their family history. All the tests came back negative. We are waiting for an MRI and to find out if it could be a blood clot. I am an LPN but have only been so for about a year. Any other ideas as to what this could be?

Nursegirl, does his symptom persist? Also was he taking any medications at the time?

I'm asking because I have the same symptom and they don't know what's caused it.

Thanks

Hi, Apart from ministroke( TIA or CVA) the other possibilities of such one sided body weakness  could be pinched nerve or spinal disc problem but a complete history( time duration, any gait changes, facial expression change and any medications he was using or underlying diseases like diabetic neuropathy) is required to confirm diagnosis on the same. As you are already waiting for MRI scan report therefore it is best to wait until you receive the results which I hope can make many doubts clear. Take care !!

They did all the tests to rule out a CVA and thankfully it wasn't that. They are thinking possibly a pinched nerve. He is having an MRI today so hopefully we get those results asap and we can get some answers! We were glad to hear it wasn't a stroke but at the same time would be relieved to have an answer. He has not experienced any facial expression changes and has no obvious signs of CVA/TIA except the numbness. He has mild weakness in the right leg but not to the extent of any changes to his gait. I will check into any family history or possibility of diabetes and do some digging to see what I can find out. Thanks for your help and reassurance. :)

So they have ruled out a blockage of any kind. They are thinking it is a piched nerve but have him booked for a nerve conduction study and some other tests. I guess we will just wait and see.

They ran some more tests and he had an appointment with a neurologist in the city. The neurologist says it was a pretty major stroke and it was somehow missed when he was first assessed.
Now they are testing his kidney function and continuing to monitor his blood work and blood pressure as it is still sky high. They have him taking regular aspirin OD, hydrocholorothiazide, and lisinopril so hopefully it will come back under control soon.
Thanks for all your help.
