Right sided weakness and muscle cramps

Hi,
My partner is a 35 yr old male who for  the last 2 weeks has been suffering from  severe muscle cramps in is right hand and right foot.  It starts with a tingling in his right arm from the elbow downwards which then causes his hand to cramp and lock with the fingers clawing in towards his palm.  At the same time, his leg starts to burn from the caf down into the foot and goes into a cramp with his toes turning downwards and inwards.  The muscles cramp for about 10 - 30 seconds and then both cramps go away simultaneously.  The am and leg then feel weak afterwards,  The foot feels painful for anythiang up to a few hours.  This is happeninig between 5 and 8 times a day. He had not excercised for years but otherwise is a normal weight for his height. Diet not good, lots of crap and has smoked cannabis a few times a day on and off fore years (trying to stop).   I have persuaded him to go and see his GP soon as I am concerned about possible neurological implications.  Are these symptoms typical of anything in particular?  I believe that they are symptomatic for a few possible neurological conditions, including MS but have not come across anything that they are typical for exclusively.  I am a former biomedical scientist so should understand any medical terminology you are able to provide in a response.  Thankyou. Kate
