Ritalin for use in brain damage

Ritalin for use in brain damage

My father has been hospitalized for quite some time now with UTI's, pneumonia, hyponatremia, and may have had some brain damage as per EEG (gray and white matter dysfunction, slowing pattern).  He sleeps alot and most times is non-verbal, but when he does wake up he is verbal and makes sense.  His doctors have put him on Ritalin so that he becomes alert again and can hopefully participate in rehab.  He is on 5mg a day.  He is also on Keppra for partial complex seizure.  Is this amount of Ritalin enough to do its job and also what do the EEG findings indicate? Thanks

Hello Dear,
Ritalin is a mild central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control.
Take Ritalin exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. The EEG findings may be indicative of degenerative changes.
