SAM-e (s-adenosylmethionine)

by KimM__0, Apr 06, 1999 12:00AM

Hello and thanks for reading my message.
I've posted several messages over the past few months.  Got responses to some from your doctors that were helpful.
I now have a question regarding a natural anti-depressant called SAMe (s-adenosylmethionine).  Right now I am taking 30mgs. per night of Amitryptilin for what my doctor thinks is Fibromyalgia.  I believe it helps somewhat, but nothing major.  I would prefer not to be on it.
I have read recently that SAMe works better than tryclic anti-depressants in treating Fibro. and other similar disorders with fewer side effects.  It has been used safely and effectively in Europe for over 40 years.
Could a doctor, or anyone with experience with SAM-e give an opinion on this?  Tell me where I can get it?  What the correct dosage is? (I've read most people take approx. 800mgs. per day).  I want to discuss this option with my Rheumatologist in a couple of weeks.
  Thanks for your time.

I am afraid that as the remedy concerned is not approved for use by the
FDA we do not have any experience with the it, as it is simply illegal for
us to prescribe the drug.
Since all drug dosages are governed by FDA regulations we do not have any
authorative source from which to make recommendations.
It is very possible that the agent has beneficial effects but the absence
of regulation may mean that people selling it are not subject to the usual
restrictions in terms of making claims for its benefits and revealing
potential side effects.
I would encourage you to research widely on the drug before taking it and
try to substantiate any claims form as many different soursces as possible.
Since it is not regulated here you may find it difficult to find a physician
who will take responsibility for overseeing your therapy with it.
I am sorry we cannot be of futther help but with non-FDA approved products
our hands are tied.
This does not mean that it does not work, just that it has not (?? yet )
undergone the extremely rigorous testing required by the FDA for public
safety. I wish you good luck.
