SSRIs

SSRIs

For 5 years I was prescribed and took a variety of SSRIs for depression.  It turns out that the symptoms were probably caused by 2 brain tumors which have been successfully removed.
What effect does this 5 years of unnecessary SSRI use have on my brain - does it have an affect on my ability to produce and uptake serotonin without chemical help?

Dear Wilcoxe,
I use SSRIs.  I've been on them, off them, over seven years.  They soften my focus, which is precisely what I need.  Withdrawals can be stunning.  Horror stories are based on those experiences.  Takes some time.  If things get rough, a short-term tranquilizer will help you get through.  But eventually people do return to normal.  Your serotonin chemistry will remain intact.  Mine has.

Hello.

The SSRI works to increase the serotonin levels by inhibiting its reuptake. It will not hamper the production ability. And after discontinuing (rather, tapering) the SSRI, your serotonin system will return to a normal functioning.
