Sarcoma in Sciatic nerve

Sarcoma in Sciatic nerve

Good day
My father-in-law was diagnosed with a sarcoma in his sciatic nerve in the buttocks area last year. He experienced pain and got a drop foot, the doctor explained this was due to a pinched nerve in his lower back and performed a micro fusion. A few months later the pain didn't subside and the feeling in his foot didn't improve. Only then did they did a proper investigation and found the mass. Most of the mass around the nerve was removed and he underwent chemo and later radiation. He is still in a lot of pain, with no real improvement. If this is comletely removed ( with the nerve), what will the consequences be? is this the best option?
Thanks a lot

Hi,

How are you?
It is important to preserve sciatic nerve function while excising the sarcoma, since it is the main nerve supplying the leg and the foot. Sciatic nerve resection will result in mild to moderate disability.
In some patients however limb sparing surgery is done including complete nerve resection because limb salvage option offers a better quality of life for the patient.
Hope this helps!
