Scalp Pain

I am 54 y/o male and have been experiencing scalp pain on the top of my head in the back right side. This is sensitive to the touch. The pain comes and goes and on occasion there is a throbbing sensation. There are no other symptoms such as numbness, tingling, etc anywhere else, except muscle tightness in the right shoulder. It feels better when I apply heat...and does not respond to over the counter pain medications. I have had this about a week.

Any ideas?

Hi.

There are several possibilities that could be causing your symptoms, including tension headache and migraines. Migraines are usually characterized by a throbbing headache although there is commonly associated symptoms of visual auras or dizziness. Tension headaches usually present as tenderness occurring at the scalp, neck, and shoulders, but the pain is commonly dull initially on presentation.

You can continue to apply heat to ease the pain. If your symptoms persist or worsen, you should consult a physician to fully evaluate your condition and probably take more potent pain medications. Some relaxation techniques may also help in your condition.

Hope this helps.
