Secretin

by Marialid, Dec 06, 1998 12:00AM

I am studying Speech-Language Pathology. I am in my second year.  Right now I am doing my Intership with children with autism. Many of the kids' parents are talking about injecting them with a medication named Secretin.  I am worried about it. I would like to know if there are secundary effects associated with this medication.  Thank you.

There is only one report in the literature of the use of secretin in children with autism and it only refers to three children, this is really insufficient to infer either a definite therpautic use or to screen for side effects.
Nevertheless, secretin in a compound normally found in the body, and it therefore has a low incidence of side effects.
There is no information in the literatue on side effects in humans, it does slow gastric emptying but this is not usually clinically significant. There is a single report that chronic administration in mice can lead to cancers of the pancreas  however this is only one report and there is no human data available.
