Seizure-Tuberous Sclerosis

by ShrilathaAcharya, Nov 10, 2009 03:36AM
Hi,
My niece  7 yrs old had first seizure at her 6months old age. initially it was just a small movement of her hands for few seconds and continued to have a sever seizure for longer period(say about 5-10 mins) where in she used to move her hands as well legs(kind of shaking). It was once or twice a day initially, n gradually increased to 10-15 times a day(when it was sever).  She used to get the seizures when she was on sleep(had no fever). as soon as she used to get seizure, she used to be awake. n conscious and she used to cry.

A  child neurologist(Dr. Suresh Rao Aroor, Bangalore) diagnosed it as "Tuberous sclerosis"  and prescribed ACTH injection daily for 1 month. n on alternative days for another 1 month and gradually reduced (like once in 3 days,  once a week, once every fortnight, n once in a month) along with other medicines too. By then the seizure was completely stopped( may b she was 9-10 months old by then) n she is on valporic acid( 5ml - 0 - 5ml per day ) and Lamitor DT 25 MG( 1- 0 -1). This prescription was since when she was 1.5 -2yrs old.
With this her development was also delayed,(like- scrolling, standing, walking, talking). She started walking only when she was 3+ yrs old.

Once when she was 3 yrs old,she had a fever, n got seizure for around 5-10 mins.Where in Dr. asked to increase the  dose with valporic acid( 6ml - 0 - 7ml per day ) and Lamitor DT 25 MG( 1- 0 -1). and Dr. had suggested that after 3 yrs, we shall reduce the dosage.
But after 3 yrs, Dr wanted to retain the same dosage for another yr.n it was continued till now.

She has learning disabilities, she is able to walk/climb the steps, (running is stable). She is able to talk 2 word sentences, able to understand basic instructions,(has Echolalia).

About few days back, she again had a seizure where in she was unconscious and was very stiff for around 10-20 mins.

Otherthan this she has no disabilities, she is physically normal.Eats well, her sleep is ok(can not say very good)/but seems to have very less immunity power. She is prone to get cold/fever.

Can anybody guide us more about-
1. How can we stop this seizures?
2. Is these seizures damaging her brain?
3. Can we cure this tuberous sclerosis by operation
4. What will be her development growth?
5. Will these medicines have any side effects in her later age?
6. What are the first aids if she gets the seizure again?
7. Can anybody suggest Doctors for us to take a second opinion about her case?
8. Any other guidance?

Thanking you
Awaiting for the reply-

Sincerely,
Shrilatha Acharya
Bangalore.
