Seizures in infants

by chels147, Oct 15, 2007 08:24AM
Back in Sept my 11month old had a seizure as he went rigid with a completely glazed expression and no response, was also dribbling we called an ambulance - his breathing also became shallow.  (Have a 4yr old who has had febrile convulsions - this was different).  Ambulance arrived within 4minutes by which time he had returned to 'normal'!  His temperature was taken and found to be 37.8 he was taken to a&e as a precaution.  A&E reg admitted him as she felt there was no real explaination - tonsils a little red but nothing else.  He had another 'seizure' (very mild-30-60 seconds) whilst waiting to be transferred to the ward.  Had a reasonable nights sleep.  Then had a further seizure at 10.20am temp taken 38.8 Dr said this was febrile convulsion as he did have pus on right tonsil.  I queried this and was told that this would be the reason - when I asked about blood tests or any tests was told this would not be necessary as he obviously had an infection.  (My daughters febrile convulsions were due to high temp.  I explained this was different to no avail. Hers stopped after tonsils were removed).  We brought my son home and carried on with the antibiotics, although was not convinced.  The following week I returned to my GP who checked him over gave him further antibiotics as throat and ears were a little pink!!  But said if it should happen again then we would have it investigated.  This weekend - Saturday my son suffered three 'seizures'(?) whilst sitting playing he suddenly lost concentration - went completely 'vacant' looking turned a little greyish in colour (husband and children say his lips went blue -i'm unsure) probably for about a minute - minute and a half when I picked him up he just sat with me not particulary responsive and then went instantly to sleep - no dummy no crying - not his usual pattern.  When he woke from the sleep he was absolutely fine until the next episode - which repeated as before.  He was dribbling slightly with each episode.  This also happened on four seperate occasions on Sunday - one while out in the park - sitting on the grass playing with a ball.  On each occassion I have checked his temperature and it has been no higher than 37.1.  So far today he has not had one although I think he may have had one in the night as I found him sitting up in his cot just staring, again unusual for him.  I have taken to the GP today who agrees with me he thinks they may be petit mal seizures - and may be connected to what the now received hospital letter refers to as his grand mal seizure back in Sept.  We are awaiting a 'fast track' appointment at the hospital.  Within the next 2weeks.  Any ideas please.

i'm epileptic and have been for 19 years (since i was 11).  when i was first diagnosed, i was diagnosed with grand mal seizures; today, i have both petit mal and grand mal seizures.  does he have any convulsions?  if not, it could be petit mal.  no matter what kind i have, i'm very tired and go 2 sleep afterwards.  i would c a neurologist.

Thx for that.  It is in line with what I was thinking.  We still await an appointment with the paeds!!  When you say convulsions are you talking in  the sense that the whole body jumps around?  If so then no, he shakes (trembles) a little dribbles and is unresponsive and completely vacant, he then goes to sleep.  He appeared to haver a small one yesterday although he didnt go to sleep.  Is this a usual pattern to have several over a coupe of days then nothing for 9 days then one then nothing?  I did notice that when he woke yesterday morning he was a little 'clingy' he just sat with me and cuddled - normally he's down and ff like a shot wrecking the toybox!  Could it be that he knows!!
