Severe anxiety attacks

Hi
I've been suffering from severe anxiety / panic attacks for 3 years.  It's got to the stage where I can't go anywhere new where I know I'm going to have difficulty finding a toilet.  It starts of with a stomach upset then I'm physically sick I get severe diahorrea.  It's got that bad that I can;t get on a bus or train.  I've even had accidents whilst out.  I don't know why this has started the only thing I can put it down to is its around this time I had my first son.  I also suffer from numbness starting in my hands and spreading to the rest of my body.  I use to be quite a confident person but now I go nowhere which is ruining my life and my son;s.  I've tried meditating and counselling but nothing seems to work.  Can anyone help please?

Hello.

This is a difficult situation you are in. The diarrhea is part of the panic / anxiety episodes. You could also have what is called as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS is a functional disorder in which psychological issues play a major role. Anxiety and stresses increase the bowel movements associated with abdominal pain.

The numbness in the hands and the rest of the body is another characteristic of acute anxiety.

You will benefit from an anti-anxiety agent. Have you tried any of the anti-anxiety drugs?

You seem to have lost confidence. I understand this is can be difficult, but you will have to find out your anxiety provoking things, events, situations, etc. This can be achieved by brief psychotherapy sessions. If psychotherapy has not worked for you, it could be given a second chance.

Regards
