Shaking whole body after stress or fear

Shakes with awareness and EEG abnormal
by mkh9, Aug 22, 2010 11:34AM
I have had an abnormal EEG which stated migraine or seizure pattern.  I used to get sick only at bedtime and would first feel ill and get cold and get the whole body shakes like I was shivering but then would vomit all night and get abdnominal pain but no migraine or aura. I would do this until I had to go the ER and they would hydrate me and give me something like compazine and usually ended up with something to knock me out like demoral or some other relaxant. It would work but sometimes I would still vomit the next day. I would be fine inbetween episodes. Usually, I would get these epidsodes after a mid term exam in college or some other stressor or a date that I was nervous about, or excitement.  They did all the possible GI tests , such as upper and lower GI, irritable bowel disease treatment, blood tests for viral infections, brain MRI, gall bladder, liver, kidney ultrasound you name it. I finally saw a neurologist and she was the one who did the EEG. I didn't respond to Imitrex injections at all. She tired to knock me out and calm me down at bedtime by giving me a antidepressant . It did work for a while then I would start up the same symptoms. After 10 years of trying to get diagnosed I sent myself to a psychiatrist. I really was at my wits end. I had lost a lot of weight at times from the vomiting. He said I had a migraine variant. I was put on Klonopin and all the symptoms stopped. I have only had one major bout with this two years ago after drinking two glasses of red wine on a trip to France. I know I should have but it was free and I did. I threw up all the way to France. The flight attendant was a miracle worker. She gave me something she called "milk" which was a clear liquid and it put me to sleep and stopped all the symptoms. I wish I knew what it was just in case. My main question now is I was on Klonopin for 15 years and more recently Neurontin and went to another psychiatrist to get checked out and see if I could maybe get off Neurontin. Anyway, he had me do another EEG for the type that they flash lights at you because he thought I might have a petit mal or some other type of seizure and wanted to check. During the EEG when they started rapidly flashing lights at me I started shaking and tearing up uncontrollably. They stopped the EEG and I went home. I got a report in the mail that said "normal EEG for a patient on benzodiazapenes. I didn't go back to the psychiatrist because it said normal. But I still wonder, I still get the shakes and feel cold at times at bedtime sometimes after stress and sometimes not. I am aware that I have the shakes and don't blank out but feel spacey and last time it lasted a half hour and I hyperventialed. Maybe I got nervous I don't know. My husband seems to think getting me out of bed and watching TV calms it down and then I stop the shakes after a shorter time. Do you have any idea what is going on?
thank you,

I'm not a doctor, so I can't say about it being a seizure.  I have read studies that show magnesium has reduced epilepsy in people, which is similar.  It has a lot to do with neuron firing, nerves and muscles.

It would be very good to see how B Vitamin Complex and Magnesium helps you.  Check with your doctor first about taking them, just to be sure.

As for the B Vitamin Complex, I'm not too familiar with what the overdose range is.  I'd look online for a formula with at least the RDI values, and good user reviews.  I've seen many are over 100% of the daily suggested intake, so it would be good to print it up and show it to your doctor.

Magnesium varies by age and gender.

Magnesium -- the medical site "UpToDate" says:

Dosage: RDI: 400mg/day; ODA: 400-600mg/day

Toxic dose: Single doses, equal or more than, 1000mg may cause diarrhea; use caution in renal impairment...

May alter glucose regulation...

Recommends coordinating with healthcare provider if you have renal or diabetic conditions.

how much B complex can you take without overdosing or getting too much? I have an abnormal EEG and a migraine variant and have had this since I was 23. I just was wondering whether the shaking part of my symptoms was a type of seizure since my EEG stated that I have a "migraine or seizsure pattern.
thanks,

It sounds like your body is stressed out, and overreacting with nervousness, shakes, etc.  There are nutrients that are *required* for the body to handle stress.  The B Vitamin Complex and Magnesium is very important.

I've read a good deal about magnesium deficiency causing migraines.

Check with your doctor about trying B Complex Vitamins and Magnesium -- try for RDI at least.

It could be an issue with your electrolytes/minerals: Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, and Calcium.

I'd like to point you to this post:
