Shingles vaccine

I had shingles on my right shoulder and back 15 years ago. I am now 68 years old. Should I get the shingles vaccine or is it too late since I've already had it once?

I looked forever at the literature to find the answer to your question about whether some who has had shingles would benefit from the vaccine.  I did not see a straightforward answer.  I did find out the following things.

A bout of shingles probably boosts your natural immunity against another bout for 10 years or so.  The vaccine will not help people with shingles - I assume that means with a current outbreak, but I can't be sure.

The vaccine will not help someone with current post-herpetic pain (neuralgia) because that represents nerve damage and malfunction.

My gut feeling is that the vaccine might well help prevent another bout of shingles in someone who had a quite a long time ago.  It depends on the your doctor or the answer given by the consulting infectious-disease specialist.  The other possibility (and I will look for this - it just now occurred to me) that one could call the info number to the manufacturer of Zostavax and ask the question directly to them.
