Skin Burning

Three weeks ago i was out watching the Doral PGA event and i was sitting down and suddenly got the sensation that someone was putting a cigarette out on my finger. This has happened 3 times since then always on the same finger. Any ideas as to what this might be.

Without the ability to examine you and obtain a history, I can not tell you what the exact cause of your symptoms is. However I will try to provide you with some useful information.

Which finger is it?? The thumb and the first two and a half fingers are supplied by the Median nerve, and the half of the ring finger and the little finger are supplied by the Ulnar nerve. One of the most common cause of skin sensation disturbance in the hand is the Carpal tunnel syndrome where the Median Nerve is compressed at the level of the wrist and can cause, burning, numbness or tingling in the 1st 3 1/2 fingers, or one of those if it is mild. Symptoms tend to occur in a specific position of the hand e/g driving, or can wake you up in the middle of the night. Usually benign and can be treated with a wrist splint.

Alternatively if it just involves the thumb and 1st finger and you have associated neck pain, it can be caused by nerve compression in the neck

Most causes of burning are benign. Just keep an eye on it. Notice when it happens and which areas it involves. If it becomes persistent or you start developing weakness, you should see a neurologist for a full evaluation.
