Sleep Phase Disorder - what is it?

by Jule__0, Jun 02, 1998 12:00AM
I have heard of Sleep Phase Disorder and would like to know what it is please.  Also, is it curable and by what means?  Thanks, Jule

Dear Jule:
Normal sleep consists of various phases that include REM (for rapid eye movements) and non REM sleep. Non REM sleep is divided into 4 other phases that go from light to deep sleep according to EEG patterns.
During sleep there is a cyclical succession of these phases.
If any of the phases lack or is predominant at the expense of the others, there is so called sleep phase disorder.
After identifying the type of phase sleep disorder through a sleep study (polysomnogram), the appropriate medical treatment can be given. There are good medical options a to treat sleep phase problems.
If you desire to get a consultation with one of teh specialists at the Cleveland Clinic Sleep Center, you may call 1 800 CCF CARE for an appointment.
Good luck
