Slurred speech and coordination problems

Slurred speech and coordination problems

My father is 84 and for the most part has been in great shape. Watched what he ate, worked out at the gym 3 to 4 times a week and for the last 3 months his health is going down hill fast. He started having occasional slurred speech and trouble walking. Now it is at least once a day that he has these seizure like symtoms (symptoms). Sometimes it is accompanied by vomiting. They put him in the hospital and have run every test possible. He has been there for 6 days and they still have no clue as to what is causing his symtoms (symptoms). They decided to give him a seizure medicine to see if it will help control the symtoms (symptoms). He is on fall risk in the hospital because he has fallen several times when his legs just gave out from under him. I am so worried about him. He has dropped 30 pds and is starting to lose hope. He has a great deal of stress on him as well. He lost his lively hood, his home and now his wife (she is 20 years younger and is leaving him now that his money and health are gone). I know it sounds like it could be panic attacks but I have experienced his seizures 1st hand and they are definitely real. He can be standing shaving 1 minute and on the ground the next. The seizures last around an hour and and come on with no warning.
Please help! We are at our wits end.

Hi there. I understand your predicament. Your father needs an MRI brain to investigate for any stroke due to thrombosis or hemorrhage. He needs to be checked for hypertension and diabetes along with ischemic heart disease, the most common causes for a stroke. MRI would also help in figuring out if there has been a subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to a ruptured aneurysm, which would need to be clipped urgently. EEG needs to be done to check for seizures. Is he exposed to sunlight adequately? He could have drug induced ( chronic use of antiepileptics)or age related osteoporosis and osteomalacia causing instability. This would need adequate supplementation of calcium and vitamin D. discuss with his neurologist for best advice. Hope this helps. Take care.

Thanks Dr. Sharma for your suggestions. My dad told me tonite that the Dr.'s are going to give a treatment of steriods for 3 days to lower his immune system to help the antibodies in his body fight back. Does that make any since to you? I know my dad has had 3 MRI's and they have checked his blood work multiple times along with EEG's. About 5 months ago he fell and fractured his back.and really has gone down hill since.Shortly afterwards he started having some coordination problems. I thought maybe something happened in that fall that is causing a disconnect. He does not have any of these symtoms (symptoms) when he is lying down or sleeping. Only sitting, standing or walking. He has not had a MRI on his back yet. I have had a couple people tell me that a person can have a stroke and it not show up on tests. I thought it may have been one but wouldn't he have the symtoms (symptoms) all the time? Not just once a day. What do you think?
