Our son Wesley was diagnosed with LaCrosse Encephalitis in Sept. of 2001. We have been through so much and still have so many unanswered questions. One, his seizures have been diagnosed as peudoseizures He also has intense migraines with these. We do know the damage is near the Brainstem he had an MRI/MRS and it showed damage there, but did not show where his seizures could be coming from.. so they diagnosed him with pseudoseizures as he was not responding to meds either. Is it possible that the seizures could be coming from near the brainstem and that they are too deep to be picked up on EEG??? WE are on no medication at all & still Wesley is having the same problems.. Also we notice that Wesley has been getting cold sore awful around his whole entire mouth inside & Out. When this happens we notice an increase in seizures & migraines. His face will also get puffy under his eyes at times. Is it medically possible there could be a connection?? He gets them often usually once a month or everyother month. They blister , and look awful. I do know his Viral part of the immune system has been affected after the encephalitis , only four months later he had the worst case of chicken pox & chicken pox pneumonia our infectios disease specialist had ever seen, and we sent an immune study to the Mayo and it was compromised. Based on what we know today, seizures do not come from the brainstem. If your son had video/EEG monitoring during a spell, a change in the EEG would typically be seen. However deep foci or seizures starting between the two hemispheres of the brian can be difficult to detect, but not impossible.
I am aware of no connection between the migraines, these spells, or the ulcers. If you are still questioning the pseudoseizure diagnosis, then perhaps it is reasonable to have a second opinion at a pediatric epilepsy center. If you are in the area we have 4 wonderul pediatric epilepsy doctors on staff.
