Speech Difficulty - Neurological?

I have been diagnosed with MS since 1993 but it has been in remission until July 2007.  My neurologist states that my disease is in-active and therefore has denied me the DMD's.  I also have a history of seizures that I presented with in 1993 and as a result of a positive MRI and LP I was diagnosed with MS.  I have been on Tegretol 400mg/day for 14 years but the dosage has been up and down for the last 18 months until last December when I was prescribed 300mg/tid for seizures and nerve pain.  I do have trouble with speech, i.e. slurring, stuttering and word retrieval but I realized today that the following is something that I have not explained to my physicians...partly because they are not too interested in what is happening to me and partly because the opportunity never arose as my husband and I were ushered quickly from every doctor's office that we have been in.

This is something  that has been happening for a while.  I will start to say something and know what I want to say but absolute jibberish results and spews from my mouth.

For example...I will think to say...I heard that Albert is going on a cruise.

What comes out is "ashudneshunsheeeeesmshshsanso"...or something very close to that...totally indistinguishable as speech!  This has been  happening for a while and I just realized that this is not really like the problems I have with slurring and stuttering and word retrieval.  I know what I want to say and this is how it comes out!

This doesn't happen all the time mind you...I can't tell you when it is going to happen and I can't say that it is related to anything in particular.  It just happens...perhaps when I am pre-occupied with the tv and suddenly want to say something it will come out like this and I have to rethink what I am wanted to say and then I usually still struggle to get it out but that is when hubby starts his "mind-reading" phenomenon and can usually finish what I start to say and can't finish.

I am wondering if this could possibly be related to something like a temporal lobe seizure.  What make me think this is that I have been having many incidences of smelling odors that others don't smell.  For example, I was at my Mother's a few weeks ago and apparently was standing at the kitchen sink and complained about a terrible smell. (I don't recall this, I was told about it today by my Mother)  I apparently found a sponge and picked it up and smelled it and said "this is the culprit" and proceeded to toss it in the garbage.  Later, when I left the room, my Mother retrieved the sponge from the garbage and both she and my husband smelled it and it smelled fine to them...perhaps because it was a brand new sponge...never been used, just out of the package!

I don't know what you can attribute this strange activity to but I would certainly appreciate your opinion on the subject and if you feel that I should be seen by a neurologist regarding this problem.

Sincerely,
Rena705
