Spinal MRI for MS?

Spinal MRI for MS?

I have a previously posted message below, regarding acquired rotary nystagmus.  For now, the cause remains unknown.  MS has not been definitively ruled out, although MRI of my brain (twice, second was very focused) have shown no clear lesions.  There is a questionable area which may be a single lesion, but that alone is of course not MS.  I have had many clinical symptoms that seem like MS, however.  I have noticed many references in this site and others to a SPINAL MRI being done.  This is curious to me.  I found a site that mentions that MS lesions can occur anywhere within the central nervous system.  Is an MRI of the entire spine ever done when MS is suspected?  Could MS lesions be located in the lumbar or thoracic spine, for example?  I have had an MRI of the C-spine, which showed nothing other than a small disc bulge.
Like many people, I have neuro symptoms (tingling from time to time, headaches, numbness, muscle weakness, etc.) that no one has been able to pin down.  They ALL started less than a year ago, following a bizzare illness that took 2 months of antibiotics to cure.  (Lyme was considered and ruled out).  I have resigned myself to being patient, and just going from  day to day, thrilled when I have a good day.  I know not to push myself, because over-exertion results in a numbness to either an arm, leg or hand, followed by a severe headache, dizziness beyond compare, and so on.  The routine never varies.  I know you cannot diagnose me or anyone else - if my own doctor can't, how could you?  But your answers and advice here are priceless.  Thank you for the comfort and peace of mind you provide.

Dear Mary:
MRI of the spine may be done to diagnose MS in cases when there is clinical suspicion of the thoracic and/or lumar cord involvement. The suspision is usually based on the Clinical neurological examination and the patient;'s own symptoms. Your symptoms of rotary nystagmus can not be explained by thoracic or lumbar lesion.
Considering the other symptoms they are not very well defined or specific of MS.
I would suggest that you get  a second opinion from another neurologist about your condition, that starts with complete neurological examination before you start another set of tests.
If you are interested to seeing one of the specialists at the Department of Neuorlogy of the Cleveland Clinic, you may call 1 800 CCF CARE.
Good luck
