Spinal leak

In December of 2001 my husband had a herniated disk repaired because of numbness in his arm and index finger.  Two weeks after surgery he began to have headaches and be light-headed.  He has been to several doctors.  He has had the caffeine IV.  He has had the bed rest for five days.  He has taken different anti-depressants.  He is currently going to Physical thraphy three times a week for three weeks.  Nothing has helped or even began to help with the headaches.  One doctor suggested a blood patch but the doctor he was sent to for the patch said it was too risky in the neck area.

What can we do?  It is very upsetting and depressing for him and for me as well as painful.  The pain never goes away.

If it is a postoperative leak in the cervical region, he needs to go back to the surgeon to be formally evaluated and then possibly undergo surgical repair. Sometimes they need to go back in and put mesh in the region. This problem is not an uncommon one and we have seen patients improve after surgical intervention here at the clinic. If your surgeon is unwilling or unable, take your husband for a second opinion. Best of luck.
