Spinal tap nerve damage in children

My 4yo son had a seizure in November and the E.R. doc wanted to do a spinal tap on him after finding nothing from the other tests. After the tray was set up for the test he noticed it was an adult kit. He searched for probably 5 minutes for a smaller needle but couldn't find one. He used the one in the kit telling us it would be fine. He ended up hitting a nerve which put my son in the hospital 3 days later on morphine and vicadin to control the pain. He was in the hospital for 3 days. My concern is that this damage will cause problems in the future. I have heard many stories of people living with nerve pain the rest of thier lives because of this procedure gone wrong. Is there anything we can do to avoid future problems?

Sorry to hear that, post dural pain is HORRIBLE, the headaches are the worst thing. I had an LP done on november and spent 2 weeks in bed because of the pain, I too was on Vicodin, and it was so harsh on my stomach, I can not imagine haw bad it can be to a child's, I had constant nausea an lots of vomiting, they gave me meds to protect my stomach. The doctors told me to stay WELL hydrated, I was desperated (I have 2 kids I had to take care of + work) and one day the pain went away completely, ofcourse it took many more days than I was told! I have not had any more pain related to the LP.
