Spine Deformation and Joint Pain

My father is 75, and has been having chronic pain for 3 weeks.
A cat-scan was performed and he was told his upper spine is deformed. He went to see a neurosurgeon who said there was only one type of surgery that was risky and offered only possible relief. The surgery involves metal rods to straighten the spine.
Shortly my father will see a rheumatologist to see if he can get another solution to his problem. I was hoping that someone could tell me who else he might see and what other treatments might be possible. Are steroids effective etc?
Thanks much.

Matt, I would consult another neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine specialist that is on the faculty of the best hospital in your area.

I would be glad to point you in the right direction.
