Strange symptons and no help

by Renestrange symptons, May 13, 2003 12:00AM
THis all started 6 months ago. I was under high stress at work. I got some sort of viral bug that made me very very tired, not debilitating, but very tired for me as I am a very energetic person.  I had several muscle fasculation in my right leg and then it moved to my stomach wall. I had up GI and colonoscopy, everything negative. During this time I had a icy hot sensation, lasted about 3-4 months in my arms between elbow and shoulder. Some weaknes that has sunce gone along with icy hot sensation. I then proceeed to have muscle walking acros my shoulders maily at night,. I have bulging disks at C3 and C5 from a car wreck ten years ago. The shoulder walking went away and then I started having mild "muscle pulsing" in my rt. hand along thumb, then it would move to rt leg. After about 4 months of these tremor/ pulsing I started getting "vibration feelings in my rt leg and then left. All of these tremors and pulsing would move from one place then the next. I never really had them all at once. I am also waking up at night with more vibrations at night than during day. I've had a brain MRI for MS- NEgative. I had cervical and thoracic MRI. Showed two bulging disk and some degenerative signs. (I am 43 years old) None of which were diagnosed to be pushing on the spinal column. I 'v had a negative Lyme Western Blot test.  I am now beginningMy internaist and Nuro are saying post trama or viral effects. The last 6 weeks I have had eye and facial twitching and "Brain  Tremors"  at night maily.THese are quite unnerving to feel your internal brain, lower neck to mid head vibrating HELP

There appear to be multiple symptoms that do not localize to one portion of the nervous system and do not fit any one particular disease.  If the vibrations and twitching are getting to be a problem, consider an EMG to better characterize the integrity of the muscle and nerves. It is possible that it could represent a post-viral condition, but other possiblities should be ruledout such as thyroid disease or electrolyte abnormalities.  Talk to your PCP about some routine blood tests if not already done. GOod luck.

Hi I am a 23 yr old female. I started having similar problems 9 mos. ago after the birth of my baby. Tingling, numbness, twitching, icy-hot feeling in left shoulder blade while sitting bent over, tendon tightness, buzzing sensations, tendon tightness. I have had a brain MRI-Normal, C-Spine-Normal, Blood-normal, NCT-Normal, Evoked potentials lowers-normal, Neuro exam-normal. No diagnosis, and some lingering symptoms. I`m beginning to think this is viral too. Can you tell me a little bit about the diagnosis` your doctors have gave you? I too was under stress when this began. Thanks...

Hi everyone-

I belong in this thread also. I've had muscle twitching for 5 months.  I've seen neurologist and have had an emg and ncv tests, and all were normal.  I do have thyroid problems-hyperthyroid.
Doc's have told me it could be thyroid related or stress related. I have both so..I'm clueless on why I experience this annoying condition.  I'm on thryoid med's but am still experiencing these crazy symptoms.

Anxious to hear what the doc's say..probably say benign fasciculation syndrome is my guess.

unfortunately for all who commented I'm not alone. I think I 'm going crazy at times. My Neuro has me taking 60 - 80 mg of baclofen throughout day to suppress vibrations. 3-64 mg of Magnesium daily. I missed these and vibrations seemed worse.Nero said he really doesn't know wht 'IT" is other than post Trauma or post viral affects of nervous system. Since it has affected my face he has backed off of the Spinal column injury but says it may be compounding symptons.I have been referred to KU Medical center but my appt isn't until July 28. I have started a log to try to make sense of this. It seems that high sugar intake  or hormonal changes may intensify vibrations (not sure). I haven't talked about this with my Neuro yet. I have also seen a chiropractor that specializes in general nutrition and acupuncture . With what seemed a strange diagnosis process of acupuncture pressure points he told me I was low on Calcium, adrenal (I have been exhausted) and the cerebellum part of my brain was weak, so he suggested vitamins of Nueroplex and Ribonucleic Acid and a different multi vitamin of Juvenate. He concurred with the magnesium the Neuro had prescibed. My energy level is almost back to normal(This took a month) so I am weaning to normal dosages for maintenance of calcium, adrenal and multi vitamin. After a week of the neuroplex the vibrations have left my "brain area" but are back in legs. Just trying to make sense of all of this.

I know what all of you are going through.  I have had similar symptoms for the last year since the birth of my first baby. I have had so many tests- MRIs, Spinal Tap,bloodwork- all negative. I was orginally diagnosed with fibromyalgia but current doctors are treating me with B12 shots, since B12 was low.  This has helped with the vibrations I feel in my feet.  I also am taking alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10 and DHA(fish oil)which was prescribed by my doctor.  All seem to help and symptoms get worse when I stop. So my only hope is that if I continue to do what I'm doing that these strange feelings will go away.  I also went to see an environmental MD since most of these symptoms started after moving into a new house- they are checking my blood for pesticide/toxins to see if that is what is causing it.  I'll keep you all posted

Thanks for the response. I have had general blood work but I don't know details of what was checked but all was said to be normal. My major concern is ALS and MS. Would these symptons lean towards one of these more than another?

To: lmar6282...and everyone
For 16 months I have exactly the same symptoms with test after test after test and it's only gotten worse.I can't work or function. One doctor thought it was depression although I've never been depressed in my life so he put me on anti-depressents. It did no good. I am on pain killers which help a little but I'm beginning to fear MS.   I am at my wits end but I am going to a new neuro on Friday. Does anyone else experience nausea and stomach problems along with their other symptoms. Would like to talk to anyone that can give me some advice.

This is for the many posters on this board who report variations of peripheral neuropathy and MS-like symptoms, especially the many who are frustrated that conventional medical testing and workups have left you without solutions, or even diagnoses.
In people who report sensory and/or motor disturbances, tingling, numbness, and other unusual sensations in BOTH upper and lower extremities, and/or the face, the cause is most likely not a localized lesion, nerve root entrapment, or other focal problem. These types of complaints smack of a systemic problem, one attacking the body's entire nervous system and possibly the cardiovascular system as well. Environmental exposures, namely chemicals should be suspected, especially when there is a history of such exposures.
For at least some of you folks with these types of symptoms, I would strongly suggest you ask yourself whether you consume aspartame in your food. I would bet that many of you use diet products, especially "sugar-free" lines of products containing the now ubiquitous aspartame artificial sweetener (sold as "Equal" and "Nutrasweet"). The two amino acids making up 90 percent of aspartame are neurotoxins/excitotoxins in large enough doses, which themselves can cause problems with the nervous system. But the most harmful constituent of aspartame may be the 10 percent of the product that binds the two amino acids together -- methanol (wood alcohol). That substance breaks down in the body into first formaldehyde (used in embalming) and then formic acid (the poison in ant stings).
Methanol is a powerful neurotoxin, one that may slowly be pickling your nervous system. The damage may be permanent, but you can at least halt the progression of methanol poisoning by halting your intake of the poison. There are, on the other hand, many instances of people having improvement in their symptoms upon eliminating aspartame from their diets.
I certainly understand anyone being skeptical that aspartame is the cause of their problems, but there is an easy way to prove this suggestion wrong. Simply eliminate ALL aspartame from your diet for 60 days, and see if your symptoms improve. If you need artificial sweeteners in your life, there are at least four or five others that are available.
Many of you have expressed great frustration at the inability of the medical profession to even identify the cause of your problems, let alone treat your illnesses. What do you have to lose by trying my suggestion?
