Swelling, Pain Behind Left Ear

by IronCatfish72, Apr 21, 2004 12:00AM
Good morning,

I noticed some swelling behind my left ear (in an area where, my PCP said, the muscles from my neck are located on the back of my skull).  It hurt, but I've been to my PCP twice, and he said it was harmless, to take Advil, use a heating pad, etc.  It's still swollen, and still hurts.  My PCP referred me to a neurologist, but that appointment isn't until June, and it still hurts (was worse when I flew; accompanied by stiff neck/shoulder).

Also, at one point, my wife noticed what looked like a pimple there. The blemish feels like it's at the heart of the pain, but when I touched it, it didn't feel like a pimple.

What could this be? Is it cause for concern? Can I wait until June to see the neurologist? What should I ask the neurologist when I see him/her?

Thanks.

Without seeing what this "blemish" looks like, it is difficult to determine what this is. Unless this is a muscle spasm from muscle irritation, I am not sure what this could be, from a neurologic perspective. Things in this region which could "swell" include muscles and lymph nodes. If this is a muscle spasm, it could be secondary to a disc problem in your high cervical spine. If the belmish is new, I would return to your PCP for another look. I wish I could be of more help, but without seeing the lesion it is difficult. Good luck.
