Dear Vanda,
I also just like you have a swollen optic nerve in my left eye. I went to the ER as it just went.. it wasn't progressive as meaning got worse over time.. it was just a sudden thing. I have been to a Optamologist which diagnosed me with "a swollen optic nerve". Then was referred out to a Neurologist Oncologist, who had ordered a MRI, Steriods and blood test. I as well have come back normal on all. I now have to go see a Optamologist Neurologist to see what exactly is causing my eye to be doing this. It has been about 2 weeks since the onset and I can see better, not as clear but better. It is vitally important that you contact your DR. ASAP.. as it a precursor to MS. and you should be checked for that.  I am lucky as all of my testing came back great (normal) with the exception of my B12.

Hi,

Swollen optic nerve is known as optic disc edema. The common causes are optic neuritis, papilledema, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.
The treatment will depend upon the cause. I would suggest you to consult an ophthalmologist at your earliest.

Thanks

Hello!  I am dealing with the same problem as you.  I was diagnosed with bilateral optic neuritis about a month ago and have gone through a lot of testing. The most common cause of optic neuritis is Multiple Sclerosis, but there are also many other things.  Like herpes, lupus, certain drugs, viral or bacterial infections.  I would try and get an appointment with a neurologist and he would probably order an MRI or different tests.  I am still uncertain as to what is causing my optic neuritis, because all the tests i've had done have returned normal.  Hope you keep us updated!
