Symptoms of nerve involvement?

  I have herniation in both L5-S1 and L4-5.  I am having lots of areas of numbness and tingling and leg and toe pain.  How do I tell which nerve is causing the problems?  What are the characteristic symptoms that demonstrate nerve involvement in such cases?
===========================================================================
Every nerve has a characteristic distribution of motor and sensory functions
the distribution of which can be used to localize the nerve concerned. The
pattern of weakness may be sublte but usually reflexes which are served by
the same nerve root are lost. Most nerves also have a sensory territory which is a characteristically shaped strip of skin supplies by that nerve.
In your case the fact that the pain goes below the knee suggests that the
sciatic nerve is involved since this is the only nerve whose branches go be
low the knee, it also arises from the nerve roots you have problems with.
