TIA or Migrane(migraine)

TIA or Migrane(migraine)

I am a 28 year old healthy female.  Last week had a slight headache then approx 1 hour after headache started vision in left eye became blurry.  Then the left arm went numb.  The vision and numbness lasted for around 2 hours.  Went to ER and they said it was just a migrane (migraine).  I have never had one before. If this has happened to anyone else any insight would be appreciated.

I too have suffered migraines with aura.  Differently than yours though, I lose the vision PRIOR to the onset of headache.  I lose my peripheral vision first, then it comes back but there is lots of "visual noise" (as I call it--like stars etc), then that goes away and the numbness goes slowly down my arm, then to my face and even sometimes the tongue.  After that all subsides I am usually left with a pretty good migraine that usually goes away after a good night's sleep.

I have recently been to a neurologist regarding these aura/migraines.  He said it is very normal. Had an MRI & CT scan and everything was clear.  My mother suffered from headaches/migraines too, I am just hoping that neither of my 2 children inherit this condition.

My migraines started in my mid 20's.  I am 36 now.  I asked my neurologist about stroke or TIA's and he said that they move much faster than do the symptoms of the headache with aura.  That eased my anxiety, but I can tell you as you probably already know, when that is happening to you it is indeed VERY scary, especially the first few times it happens to you.  I keep track of how many I get per year and the time frame it takes to complete just so that I have a journal to take to doctors if they are to ask me questions.  Hope that helps.

It's true that your symptoms could have been related to migraine, but why not see a cardiologist and then neurologist to make sure? I wouldn't go by what they tell you in the ER, you need a full work up.

Just and update.  I went to the neuro and he ordered a carotid study, echocardigram, MRI, and MRA.  The carotid and echo came back fine, as well as the MRA.  The MRI found a few white dots in the white matter of the brain.  Neuro says this is related to migranes (migraines) and wants to repeat the MRI in 6 months.

I have been going through this exact thing since Feb 20th.  I have been to a neurologist, who after checking all my EKG's, CT's etc. has referred me to a headache clinic.  The only thing different is I get the numbness in my arm, hand, cheek, tounge, can't talk properly and my eye feels like it wants to cross - BUT I DON'T GET THE HEADACHE!!!  I had 2 of these before - 17 years ago and 15 years ago, except back then they told me I was having a TIA (as they didn't know as much about migranes (migraines) back then)  I'm 39 now and they've pretty much pegged what I am going threw right on the nose.  As long as your head scans are good - don't sweat it.

Tigger,
How old are you ? Ask your doctor about CADASIL since your MRI has some white matter ... any history of strokes / dimentia (dementia) / migraines / depression in your family ?

CADASIL is a blood vessel disease that usually starts in the brain ... the only way to diagnos this is with a DNA blood test ... if you need any other information please let me know ...
