Tendon, muscle, § Joint pain

HI, I’m not sure were to post this so I am sticking it in the general board.

I am hoping to get some ideas to take to my doctor concerning the condition I have developed. At this point we are out of ideas. I’ll list the progression of events and symptoms and hopefully somone can aim us in the right direction.

It started with a bout of diverticulitis. I was on antibiotics (2) and a liquid diet for two weeks. I have had in the last month and a half a CT scan (abdomen), a colonoscopy, and numerous blood workups.

As the attack subsided I developed pain in my abdomen, upper right quadrant, that feels like its in the abdominal wall. Then I started having pain in my wrists from my thumb up my arm. I believe my doc diagnosed it as De Quervain's tenosynovitis. (as a note I have had this before in the wrists). Now I am having the same type of pain as my wrists in my shoulder and both hips. A throbbing, burning pain, the feeling of tearing and numbness on the skin along the fore arm from the thumb up about 6 inches. Along the back of my shoulder and on the back side of my hip joints right were the leg meets the butt. He has me taking celebrex and it does help but it’s only treating the symptoms.

My doc did blood work and had me screened for Lyme disease (we are in Eastern PA) but it came up negative. My last blood work came back with everything looking fine.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

A systemic inflammatory condition such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and non-specific markers of inflammation may be helpful. Also vitamin B12 deficiency should be excluded. The pain symptoms due not follow a specific neurologic distribution, but without examining you I can not be sure. It would be reasonable to have a consult with a neurologist. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. We did look at Lupus and Lyme disease.

I am going for an abdominal ultrasound Thursday as my doctor thinks that the tendon pain might be un-related to the abdominal pain. I believe the next step is for me to see a neurologist.

Although I have been off it for 4 weeks I am still not convinced its not a reaction to the Cipro I was taking for the diverticulitis. I noted in my reading that quinolone based antimicrobial agents can cause Tendon swelling and ruptures.

I’ll post a note when we figure out what it is.

You were for the most part sedated for the colonoscopy.  It is not uncommon for a patient to report these kind of symptoms after being sedated and manipulated physically.  I have had patients report that after seeing a chiropractor and massage therapist for a period of time that these symtpoms resolve.  Because of the antibiotic use and the gi compaints, I highly recommend that you consider a probiotic to rebuild your colon.  I also agree with the physician here. Please consider B-12 deficiency as well as other nutrients.  A complete multivitamin and mineral from a health food store just might help.  Consider avoiding added iron in the vit.  I prefer whole food vit. to synthetic.  They are absorbed better by the body.  Take the time to research what I have said.  You can go to www.mercola.com to help.  God bless

I had been on CIPRO for 1 week taking 1000mg a day to treat a urinary tract infection.
The day after I stopped taking CIPRO, I developed weak joints and tingling in my thumbs.  I actually fell to the ground trying to get in an SUV because my leg gave away.  The symptoms worsened as the days went on  now my hands are tingly and all my joints hurt.  It has been 1 week.  I have gone to my doctor and he thinks it may be a reaction to the CIPRO which he can do nothing about.  I am scheduled for an MRI in a week to rule out MS.  I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them and how long did it take before the CIPRO left your bloodstream and the side effevts went away.

I had an adverse reaction to Cipro about one year ago that included severe vertigo, tendonitis in both Achilles and forearms.  I was previously running on my treadmill 3-4 times per week and had to stop.  I still have pain in my Achilles and left forearm but it has much improved.  I also still have intermittent vertigo attacks.  My primary care did not believe I had this reaction to the drug but I saw an orthopedic surgeon who identified it, as he himself had had a reaction to Cipro after taking it for a second time.  He wrote me a script stating never to take it again which I carry in my wallet.  This drug reaction was probably the most frightening experience I ever had.
