Testicle pain after hernia surgery

My husband had inguinal hernia surgery yesterday on right side. He has severe pain in his right testicle - near the top . The testicle is retracted up. Any ideas before we speak with the general surgeon? Over the phone - he says this just happens sometimes - a muscle trauma thing. Doesn't sound right. We are still in the hospital and want this resolved prior to leaving,
