Tethered Cord

Tethered Cord

My cousin was born with a tethered cord.  She has had one surgery (at 2-months old).  Her pediatric neurosurgeon says she needs another surgery.  The tumor was not completely removed the first time.
Does anyone know of a Specialist in California or the West we could see for a second opinion?

Dear Kathleen,
It is occasionally necessary for a child with a tethered cord to require further surgery.  The cord can scar down again after what was considered a successful detethering at surgery.  The risk is reduced greatly after a patient has reached adulthood and growth is complete.
There are a number of fine pediatric neurosurgeons on the West Coast of the U.S.  Most major cities have an academic institution and a neurosurgical program.  The closest to you would probably be in San Francisco.  If you are confused as to your surgeon's recommendations, you should consider the second opinion to be sure surgery is necessary.
Good luck.
