Tetrobenzene

by ILADVOCATE, Aug 15, 2008 12:04AM
I am trying to find treatment for tardive dyskanesia. I am well recovered from my schizoaffective with an experimental treatment in Phase II study glycine (I was unable to tolerate Clozaril and that did not help the tardive) so there's no need to post in the mental health forum. But the tardive dyskinesia has been hard to treat. I have been prescribed all the standard anti-Parkinson's medications (Requip, Aricept, Bachlopen, Mirapex) and they caused psychosis and extreme sedation and made some aspects of the movement disorders worse. I was just titrated off Clonidine as it was causing depression and personality changes and have been trying rhodiola a natural remedy that is in fda study but is not useful throughout the day and the spasms can become very bad as well as 3 muscle relexants also of limited use. I have tardive dystonia and tardive akathesia as well as a variety of other extreme forms. My neurologist is interesting in starting me on Tetrobenzene but it can cause low blood pressure, depression and worsen some aspects of the movement disorder from what I've read. And only certain neurologists can prescribe it in the United States. My question is. Will it help? Is it worth it?

Hi,

How are you?
Tetrabenazine is used in movement disorders and is found to be quite effective. Since it is a dopamine depleting drug, it causes depression. Because of this it is recommended that patients with a history of depression should not take tetrabenazine.
Although the other adverse effects like drowsiness and sedation have been found to be manageable.

Please discuss the possibility of these side effects with your doctor in your case.
