Thumb Movement

by jannel, Nov 19, 2007 10:02AM
My husband and I married not quite 2 years ago, shortly after our marriage I noticed his left thumb shaking.  At first I ignored it, but it has progressivly gotten worse.  It shakes most of the time now.  I notice it when we are sitting and talking it just shakes away.  Other people are now asking, why his thumb shakes all the time.  Yesterday he started noticing it a little in his right thumb.  We live in a small town and I want him to get a true evaluation of why this is happening.  Should we forgo our general phyican and go to a specialist?  Would you have any suggestion as to what this might be?

Are there other symptoms that your husband experiences along with the thumb shaking? Finger twitching may have several causes.  One of them could be carpal tunnel syndrome.  Other causes may be located more proximally as a result of a number of cervical pathologies including radiculopathy, stenosis, or spondylolisthesis, or even as a result of a systemic imbalance in electrolytes that can cause cramping.  It would be best to consult a neurologist to assess this condition, especially since a bilateral involvement of the thumbs has now been noticed by your husband.
