He has recently had genetic testing, extensive blood work, and an MRI. All are conclusive that he does not have Parkinson's nor Frederick's ataxiaAcute cerebellar ataxia. His symptoms are slurred speechHearing or speech impairment - resources Speech disorders, difficulty controlling legs muscles and walking. There is no tremorsEssential tremor Familial tremor Hand tremor Tremor, no memoryMemory loss Mental status tests problems at all, no trouble swallowingPainful swallowing Swallowing difficulty. About once a month he loses all control of his leg coordination even to the point he cannot walk with a walker. This lasts about a week then he goes back to his usual unsteady gait. During this time his speech worsens also. According to his doctor, there is no explanation for what he has. There is no family history of any inherited diseases. His doctor wants to try Topamax. I have two questions. Why Topamax and do you have any idea what is wrong with my father-in-law? Is there another avenue we can take? Thank you so much for your help.
How are you?
It is quite possible that what your father is experiencing are atypical migraines. The diagnosis of atypical migraine is made after excluding all the other known and common causes of symptoms.
Atypical migraine is a type of migraine where the patient does not necessarily suffers from headache.
Topamax has shown very good results in preventing migraines. I would suggest you to please go ahead and follow the advice of your doctor after discussing this possibility with him.
