Toxic encephalitis

by HFObmar, Dec 04, 2007 03:28PM
What is toxic encephalitis and the neurological symptoms that go with it.?  I'm a Speech Therapist, who is working with an individual with toxic encephalitis at a SNF.  How does it affect cognition, swallowing, temp regulation, etc.  Thanks.

Hi.

It is secondary to some toxic substances. There is ususally a period of latency before the symptoms begin to appear. The symptoms are various depepding upon the areas in the brain involved. If hypothalamus is involved, temperature regulation is affected.  This is just an example. The ability to speak or swallow is also compromised.

Cognition is affected, too.
