Transcranial Doppler

Can things such as blood flow rate and % of blood reaching brain be obtained using a Transcranial Doppler (TCD) instead of an MRA? Can you please explain what other info a TCD can give?

Thank you

Hi there. Transcranial Doppler is a test that measures the velocity of blood flow through the brain’s blood vessels. It is used to diagnose emboli, stenosis, vasospasm from a subarachnoid hemorrhage and other problems. It is reasonably portable and is used along with MRI, MRA, carotid, duplex ultrasound and CT scans. TCD is basically a technique for measuring relative changes in flow.  It is useful in diagnosing intracranial stenosis, collaterals, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and brain death.  Hope this helps.
