Travelling Tingling and Numbness in Neck

5 days ago I started with a tingling feeling in the lower back right side of my head, near the bottom of my hair line.  It felt like randomly someone was pulling my hairs.  When I scratched it it would feel like I was scratching a cut, but there was nothing there.  It then traveled down my neck on the right side it started to become desensitized or numbing feeling.  The numbness has since traveled down to the right upper side of my chest.  I now feel the circulation in my right arm seems to be going.  I am finding it harder to type or slower doing things with my right arm and my hand feels colder than my left.  My doctor is not in until Monday and I am planning to call him then.  But I am very concerned that this has seemed to progress.

Hi,

Thank you for your insight.  I did some searching online at views of the neck.  I noticed that the SCM is the muscle track where the tingling, pain and numbness is.  I don't know if this will help the doctor when I speak with him.  But at least I know its kind of centralized.  It seems it would be more nervous system then Muscle but maybe it was based on the muscle.

At first I had thought maybe it was Shingles, but it has been 6 days and I haven't seen a rash yet, so I would rule that out.   I've scratched the area so much now that it hurts and is raw.  When it tingles it's like an Itch or shock on the inside that I can't get to by scratching.

Thank you for your question. Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern.

Usually numbness or pain in the back portion of the head originates from the neck problems due to irritation in the cervical (neck) spine because the nerves that supply the back of the head start in the upper cervical spine. Mostly, similar kind of head pain that radiates to shoulder, arms and chest occurs in patients with previous neck injuries and in patients with marked arthritis of the upper cervical spine. Typically this pain aggravates with prolonged sitting in a stooped posture and when working on a computers for long hours.  On the other hand, there are patients who experience similar pain with sinusitis (sinus with infected mucus) and migraine but it hardly radiates to shoulder. If you suffer continuous symptoms like that, please arrange an appointment with a neurologist right away who may evaluate the possibilities here and can provide you an appropriate treatment. Hope this information proves helpful to you.
Take Care & Regards!!!
