What is the main surgical treatment for adults with Moya Moya? I have been told that the least invasive treatment is to take the temporalis muscle and (in my case) relocate it to the frontal lobes so it will augment the collateral vasculature already in existence?

Hi there. Moyamoya disease is characterized by intimal thickening in the walls of the terminal portions of the internal carotid vessels both the sides. The proliferating intima may contain lipid deposits. The anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries that arise from the circle of Willis may show varying degrees of stenosis or occlusion. This is associated with fibrocellular thickening of the intima, and thinning of the media. Numerous small vascular channels can be seen around the circle of Willis. These are perforators and anastomotic branches. Various surgical procedures are superficial temporal artery- middle cerebral artery STA-MCA anastomosis, encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis EDAS, encephaloduroarteriomyosynangiosis, pial synangiosis and omental transplantation.
