Trigeminal Neuralgia or Something Else

by Killerpain, Oct 27, 2007 09:00PM
When a dental problem was ruled out after pain I received after a routine dental filing, I went to my medical doctor as Advil & Tylenol weren't relieving the daily chronic pain after a month.  She suggested it may be nerve pain and gave me Lyrica, thinking it might be dic dolorosa or Trigeminal Neuralgia.     I am going to a neurologist but not for a few months.

The pain was triggered by hot & cold but would shoot through  my upper and lower jaw, and settle near the ear and temple.  It felt like something was pinched in my temple.  The pain also travelled down my neck and somtimes towards my eye and nose - all on the left side.

Could it be anything else?

I didn't do good on Lyrica.  It made me very sleepy and depressed.  I am going off it now and will see if the pain is still there and then advise my doctor.

KillerPain is correct!!

No Advil or Tylenol will not touch this, and yes response to hot or cold will definately cause a response. Pinching or prickling, and since your pain is on one side that's a pretty good sign (not good, but you know what I mean) Tegretol helps this types of pain, almost always. Usually drs. try patients on it to see how the pain responds. Let me know how it goes... or if you have any more questions

Thanks Pixi.  I thought I posted this on the doctor's forum.  I think I will put a copy there.

Actually I'm coming off the Lyrica and so far I'm doing good.  I hope it was a temporary issue.

Thanks for mentioning Tegretol.  Actually my dentist mentioned that one.  Apparently Lyrica is new and I'm not sure if my GP knows of Tegretol or not.
