Trigeminal nerve damage

I had facial surgery 18 months ago and have varying degrees of right sided facial numbness, pain tingling of jaw and neck   I was told by a Neurologist that I have Trigemianl Nerve Damage but was really not given an answer as to how to treat.  I an MRI last month which was negative and the Dr. suggested Pamalar.  Even though this is an anti-depressant he said some people get results from this medication.  can someone please give their opinion.  I have tremendous discomfort this evening and though my palate, face and ear are not swollen I have the sensation.  Thank you

Good evening.  I am sorry you are having this problem.  While I do not have trigeminal nerve damage, I do have trigeminal neuralgia, which is an irritation of this nerve.  It seems to come and go for me.  My doctor prescribed me an anticonvulsant medication, which is usually used to treat seizures.  The generic name is carbamazepine, trade name is Tegretol (sp?).  I have had a lot of success with this medication for the pain with trigeminal neuralgia.  

Again, I am not sure if this is exactly what you are experiencing, but this drug really works for me.  It takes a few days, but the difference in the pain was incredible.
