Trying to sort out likely cause of chronic tremors

Hi all,

Over the past three years I've developed a worsening shaking throughout my body.  It started with my hands, and now I can't stand up without my legs trembling (not greatly, but it's ever present).  Halfway between sitting and standing the trembling is worse.

When I'm trying to go to sleep at night, I can feel my whole body shaking.  This does not seem to be episodic, as i feel the tremors constantly.  While they're minor now, I worry that they may get worse, or that they may mean that other things are wrong with my body as well.

I've so far seen that symptoms may be due to Essential Tremors, Lyme disease (which I have indeed had in the past 2 years), myastenia gravis, Thyroid issues, or a whole host of other causes.

If it helps, my muscles do feel weak, but strangely I'm not precluded from doing as many squats, pushups, etc as before the trembling progressed to this point.  So, the weakness is a feeling but not a reality as far as I can tell.

I would appreciate guidance on how to deal with this, and what facts may be relevant to tell the neurologist that I'll be seeing next week.  Thank you very much in advance!

Hi,

The most common cause of generalized body trembling is chronic anxiety disorder. It will help us to know if you have any anxiety issues. Myasthenia gravis gets worse with time without treatment and you have these symptoms for last 3 years so this possibility can be ruled out. More so because according to your post you do not have any muscle weakness.
I would suggest you to get a clinical exam done by your GP and blood tests done to rule out thyroid issues. Also make sure you do some deep breathing exercises every day.

Good luck!

hi...since u consider this chronic and it has gone on for so long...may I ask, have u seen a dr? if so...what did the dr say?
if not, please see one. There r many conditions that have similar symptoms , without testing u can not possibly know.

Hi1
Hi, I have been having these same symtoms you describe for the past 2 years and recently they have become worse along with bouts of light headedness. I have had all labs done my thyroid came back low but still in the normal range, Dr. put me on 30mg of armour thyroid for the last 4 months but it is not helping the shakes.
They do subside sometimes if I am completely still and relaxed but not always. Today I spent several hours in the hospital because I felt like I would passout and was shaking uncontrolable hard. They IVed me and gave me a shot of Valium which made me sleepy and relaxed but did not stop the shaking. Even when the shaking is not visable it feels like i am shaking inside. I have tried diet changes and vitamin and mineral supplaments anything I thought would help including colon cleansing but it has not stopped it any prolonged activity seems to worsen the shaking.
If you have found a possible answer please let me know. and I will do the same for you.
thankyou!
