Twitching and stuff!!

Hello and thank you for your time.

I am a 27 year old male, overweight, but in overall good health. I am active in the gym 5 days a week. (last 4 months). I work in a some what stressfull enviornment, but nothing to over the top. I am a hypochondriact (sorry for the spelling) and suffer from some sort of an anxiety disorder.

About 2.5 years I developed body wide twitching, Calfs, arms, back,  face, neck, you name it, it twitched. I freaked out and went to my primary care, he sent me to a neurologyst. EMG performed OK, Nerve Study OK, Brian MRI OK (I have a brain ), Was told its anxiety, try to relax, take some of these ( xanax). I did not take the pills, instead i started with some Yoga and stuff. Twitching got better, moved on to my next disease (Hypochondria).

About 4 weeks ago I got a cold, lasted 6 or 7 days. But all of a sudden my Tongue started to twitch on the very tip. Since then, I have been riding the ALS anxiety meltdown. I went to see my Primary care he said to chill, this time i took the xanax, it has not helped much.

My tongue looks pretty much the same, I dont have difficulty swallowing, I dont have difficulty breathing, My speach to me sounds wierd, but all my loved ones say I sound the same. My voice is strong, alittle hoarse (but I do suffer from acid reflux sometimes). My Jaw does seam as though it has a tremor sometimes.

When I pertrude my tongue it is pretty steady. It looks pretty even on both sides, one side might be slightly bigger than the other. , the only time i experience these twitches are about 7 to 10 times a day, at random times, my tongue just twitches at the tip for a brief mili-second.

Also I see a Chiropracter

I guess my Questions are:

1. Is a tongue twitch just a twitch like any other muslcle?

2. If the twitching is being caused by a disease, would the twitching be worse one day beter the next and then worse again?

3. I am freaking out of course and was wondering does this sound like ALS?

Thanks so much

some people get BFS, basically harmless twitches for which there is no known cause. I am not a Dr., but with the normal EMG/NCV, it would probably be unlikely that you would have ALS, particulary in the absence of any weakness or atrophy. if you remain concerned, see a neuro. note that a chronic high level of anxiety can do some pretty freaky stuff, e.g., every time you feel some little sensation it raises your anxiety level higher, which leads to more sensations, and more anxiety, and so on.

Hi,
Although Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis does have muscle twitching as one of its many symptoms, you will be relieved to know that a vast majority of muscle twitches occur in normal people and do not signify any sinister underlying disease.
Your neurological workup was normal, so I guess you should relax.
