Twitching in Arm muscle

by creilly23, Dec 09, 2007 05:27AM
Hi,

I am a 27 year old male who has recently had problems for almost a week now where my right bicep muscle (or a muscle near it, cant tell) twitches from time to time sometimes lasting for hours.  I am starting to get concerned that this may not be a normal thing.  In the days before the twitching began I was partying with friends (drinking and not getting much sleep) so not sure if that could have something to do with it.
My questions are:
1) Is it normal to have muscles that can twitch on and off for days or weeks?
2) When does it call for a trip to the doctor to get checked out?

Thanks.

Hi Creilly,
How are you feeling now?
Muscles twitching are also called as fasciculation’s. Muscle twitching is the result of minor local muscle contractions or the uncontrollable twitching of a single muscle group served by a single motor nerve fiber or filament. Some minor muscle twitching is common and goes unnoticed, but some may be sign of underlying neurological disorder.
Benign twitches are normal and quite common, often triggered by stress or anxiety (as in your case-due to sleep deprivation and partying extensively). Any irregularity in your daily diet can also cause similar symptoms. Any drug overdose especially caffeine. Exercise can also induce twitching.
Symptoms suggestive of a neurological cause of fasciculation’s include:
Wasting of muscle, weakness, other findings of nerve dysfunction like pain, tingling and numbness. Neurological illnesses where fasciculation’s are seen include:
Chronic denervation of muscle due to disk compression of nerve exiting the spinal cord, ALS, spinal muscular atrophy, Muscular dystrophy among others.
You can start taking multi-vitamin supplement.
Alternatively, if these symptoms are prolonged and annoying, you can take help of neurologist at earliest.
Hope this helps.
Bye.
