Unidentified Bacterial Infection

My 40 yr old brother was recently taken to a hospital with a fever of 107 (+ or - unknown). He had flu-like systems for about 5 days prior this emergency, but was otherwise healthy with no pre-existing health problems.

He has now been in CCU for 5 days (but stableizing). They attempted to grow a culture but failed. They mentioned 2 possible bacterial infections due to his symptoms--Leptospirosis or Meningococcal Meningitis. He is being attended by 2 Infectious disease specialists and the CCU team.

Stats have been as follows:

Septic Condition w/ kidney failure

Day 1
Temp: 106-107
BP: 70
Heart Rate: 140
White Count: 26k-32k
Mid-day is was conscious but delirious.

End of day 1 he was sedated and given morphine, bp raising med, anti-biotic cocktail.

Day 2
Temp: 103-105
BP: 80
Heart Rate: 120
White Count: 24-26k

Day 3 / Started Dialysis (long/slow method)
Temp: 101-102
BP: 100
Heart Rate: 100
White Count: 23-24k

Day 4 / Stopped Morphine
Temp: 99-100
BP: 120
Heart Rate: 90
White Count: 22-23k

Day 5
ceased BP meds
Temp: 99-100
BP: 120
Heart Rate: 85-90
White Count: 20-21k

My question(s) is:

The doctors have not mentioned the possibility of neurological damage related to the fever. Could you tell me how long the brain can withstand 107+ before damage occurs? And what may we expect when he comes out of this?

I realise part of your answer will be strictly opinion but that's all I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance.

I am not aware of specific data to answer your question. We know that elevated temperatures (>100) increase the disability and outcome after stroke. However, regarding how long a patient without brain damage can tolerate a specific elevated temperature is unknown. You will have to wait and see what happens as your family member begins to improve. I wish I had better information, and I am sorry i could not help more. Good luck.
