VZV lesion on MRI old or new?

I have been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, 22 weeks ago.  I had an MRI  done 2 weeks ago.   With contrast the result is: asymmetric enhancement of the left seventh nerve and geniculate ganglion, consistent with the clinical history of Ramsay Hunt lesions are identified and there is no evidence of intracranial neoplasm.  Would these lesions be the "scars" from weeks ago, or do they suggest active virus?  The neurologist wants me to take 1 gm Valtrex X 3/day for 31 days due to these findings-to reduce the swelling of the nerve.  I disagree.  I thought anti-virals are for active or suppression of the virus, that steriods are used to reduce swelling.  My biggest problem is the balance issues, especially in limited light or on uneven surfaces.  This seems like CN8, yet there is no mention of that nerve on the MRI.  Is that to be expected?

Well, it's been almost 2 weeks since I posted this question.  No response.  I was hoping there would be something, even it was the same as my neurologist "I don't know what it means."  This site is a waste of time, obviously not monitored, someone making money somehow.  Wonder if they sell email adresses?
