: I have been experiencing gradually worsening visual disturbances in the form of flickering shapes of light for the past 18 months. The disturbance is over the whole field of vision and appears exactly the same in both visual fields.
I have never had any periods where they have improved or disappeared in this time and they have gradually increased in intensity. I have no other obvious physical symptoms other than fatigue and headaches no doubt brought upon by the constancy of this effect.
I have had many tests performed for the eyes - all of which show no defect in the eyes. I have also had many neurological tests including MRI, lumbar puncture and EEG - all are normal.
The doctors seem to have ruled out migraine, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and any pschological disorder (depression etc). I have to contact my doctor again shortly, to assess the situation. Are there any suggestions as to any other avenues we could explore? Is it possible to have some sort of infection of the occipital lobe causing this as I really feel that is where the problem is coming from?
  Many thanks for your time.
  Craig.

Dear Craig,
Hello, Well this is not a simple one.  It is difficult to give
advice on symptoms like yours with the amount of info that you provided.
It sounds like you havea had a very complete battery of tests.
Your question about the occipital lobe is a valid one.  The occipital lobe can cause seizures which
appear like flashing light or unformed objects but usually they are not in both eyes adn in the complete visual field of both eyes.
Sometimes it it necessary to do a longer EEG or one with special leads to find the problem in the occiptial lobe, if there is one.
I wish that I could help you more!
Take Care!
