WEAK FINGERS AND LOSS OF MUSCLE

Hello,

My fiance has recently lost strength in his left hand and fingers to the point he can even stick his fingers in his pocket without his fingers collapsing.  Today he noticed the muscle that is between the thumb and index finger is missing.  There's a big hollow dent in between the fingers.  His doctor doesn't seem to know what it is and is sending him to physical therapy next week.  Does anyone know what this possibly be as this is affecting everything he does since he is left handed.  Thanks for your help.
