Weird symptoms that come and go

I have a multitude of symptoms, some come and go.  When one transient symptom abates, another usually starts up:

Chronic fatigue.

Increase in salivation, but not close to drooling.  Feels like I have to swallow constantly.

Electric shock sensations in feet and hands with "every" meal.  Onset is within a minute or two of eating.  Bottoms of feet also burn with "every" meal. Plus, these symptoms "always" move to any area of damage (ie. sprained ankle) until it has healed.  Eating can be very painful.

Facsiculation type sensations in feet, ankles, sometimes lower legs.

Periods when my hands drop things.  Can be left or right, but never at the same time.  (EMG/NCV was normal)

Electric shock sensations that shoot thru my feet (sometimes one, usually both) and head (along with myclonic like jerks) at the onset of sleep.

Pulsations in visual field that doc says are probably silent migraines.

Nightsweats, usually 1 a night...but sometimes 2 or 3.  Episodes often last for a week to a week and a half.

Finger tips wrinkle up (like they have been in water) between meals.  Then, when I eat, my finger tips, to the first nuckle down, turn bright red and fill back out like normal.

Other people have noticed that I am having some memory problems.

Very sensitive to heat and cold.

There are alot of other symptoms, but these are some of the oddest or most distressing.

I have had tests to check for food allergy, circulation problems, arthritis, lupus, etc., and they all came back okay.  Regular panel of blood tests came back okay.

I do have irregular blood sugar and a family history of type II diabetes.  It is not unusual for my blood sugar to rise over 130 mg/dl within 20 minutes of a meal and then swing down that much within an hour (recent Hemoglobin A1c was 4.8%). I have never been overweight.

I was wondering if you think there is a link between the metabolic problems I have and the neurologic symptoms.  I would appreciate any thoughts you might have and any testing you might think would be relevant.

I am 53 years old, female. I have electric currents go through my body. My arms and hands become numb and sometimes very cold. I have been checked for most diseases but here in Crete, the doctors don't have advanced equipment.  Lately I have had extreme sweating periods, but I am on hormone therapy so I don't think that would be from menopause.  I don't sleep and have to taking sleeping aid.  When I don't take the sleeping pill, I have vivid dreams. But, they are dreams where I am in a situation and cry for help, my husband usually, and I yell and yell but he can't hear me, and I keep trying to wake up and I can't .  A lot like a Freddy Kruegar movie.
I have osteo arthritis in my right knee, which, doesn't want to heal.  It fills up with fluid and I have to get it drained.
If that isn't enough, about every four months, I have tingleing in my upper arm that it like an incredible itch.  I use atarax for that, but lately, even 200 mg a day doesn't help.
These symptoms are real.

Hi,
I am sorry to hear that your having such distressing symptoms and i can relate because i have the same electrical type feelings and visual distortions..They say silent migraine or complicated migriane syndrome..It gets scary sometime to say the least....Sounds like you have ruled out many causes with testing..Have they checked your B-12 and MMA?  Take care and I wish you the best...betty

Dear Corona:

Sorry that your having the symptoms you describe.  I am not sure what to tell you.  The EMG with NCV and needle exam being normal, it doesn't sound like a neuropathy.  This makes the intermittent hand weakness confusing.  It is normal finding to have the glucose go up after a meal and then normalized.  Myoclonic like movements just before sleep or waking up can be a normal finding.  I have never heard of silent migraine with pulsations, so I can't comment on this.  the night sweats is worrisome, but it is difficult to tell you what this might be.  I will assume that the simple thyroid function tests were normal.  There are certain cancers and neoplastic diseases can give you night sweats, but normal lab findings makes this diagnosis unlikely.  This would also be true of a mitochondrial disease, as you have had normal labs and neurological exams.  I am very sorry, but I can't give you any light on your symptoms.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
