What can I do from here on out?

by Heidigirl, Nov 12, 2008 10:25PM
I had a tooth extracted in Dec 2007,( following an unsuccessful root canal, and unsuccessful filling replacement on same molar). The OS did not get all of the tooth the 1st time; the second time included lots of "digging" to get the root tip out. ( I don't know if that's important or not). I have had pain for a year. The OS called it phantom tooth pain, but was puzzled when the pain in my teeth later extemded to the other side of my mouth. All my xrays, including a panoramic xray look fine; my teeth check out fine. I have seen a neurologist and neurosurgeon, and am on 1500 mg of Neurontin, plus klonopin at night. I would have to be committed without these drugs! With them, the pain is manageable but there are unpleasant side affects, like weight gain and tiredness.  I have also switched dentists. I now see a prosthedontist. He suggested taking out a few of the newer fillings and replacing them with a sedative cement, as a diagnostic measure - to see if maybe the teeth had been filled incorrectly. Well, it has made no difference. Now I will have to have the temporary fillings drilled out, and composites put in again. And continue taking medicine 4 times a day for the pain I believe is neurological.I am not even 50 yet, and wish there was a better solution than all this medicine, pain every day (esp in the evenings), and no hope of getting better. I have been told my case is unusual, and not likely to be found in medical journals. I wish I could hear of someone who had this and found an answer. Thanks for listening to my case. Please let me know if you have any questions!
