I know this is brief, but it gives you a general idea of what we are dealing with.
My Step-Mother is 64. Born 1/1/48. Broke right hip 4/24/11. Heeling ok but 8/10 days after total hip replacement she started having intense burning in rectum & vagania area. Had to stop therapy. May 2011 had EMG showed all was normal no nerve damage. Burning continues & getting worse. Aug. 2011 CT scan showed all normal. Second EMG 8/11/11 all looks normal. Sept. 2011 Vascular surgeon did angigram on both legs to see if blockage was problem, all normal no blockage.Neurosurgeon eliminated piriformis syndrom Oct. 2011. Oct 2011 started series of 3 epidurals to ease pain, no help. Jan 2012 had nerve blogk shot in L5 area. This seemed to help. Jan 2012 had CT scan , all normal Burning getting worse, coating her with ice bags 18/20 hours a day.Decision made to try trial spinal cord stimulator ( used for pain but she has burning so we thought it might help. ) Trial lasted about 2 days & we thought it helped & decide to go for permanent implant.
March 30, 2012 She had permanent implant Basically L4/5 area across sciata nerve. After about 2 weeks the problem reversed itself no longer burns but now has extreme cold on spine, buttocks, everywhere. It has become so bad she sleeps very little now. She is in bed most of the day on heating pads trying to get warm & eats all meals in bed. Spinal tap & CT scan done in Aug. 2012. Neurologist at Ochsner refered us to DR. Fenoy with Mischer Nuerosciense in Houston TX, for input. His # is 281-319-8530 . Per visit on 9/26/12 Dr. Fenoy recommended a trial stimulator across the thoraxic cord. He said he thought sne might have Complex regional pain syndrom & this might help her. Oct. 30 2012 trial started & lasted 5 days, This did not help. She has tried turning the stimulator off for 7/8 days no relief form the frigid cold all over her body. The stimulator does not seem to help at all now she stays frigid cold al the time.
